Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Disability inclusion is a critical aspect of social development, particularly in terms of ensuring that individuals with disabilities have equal opportunities for economic participation and social integration. In Gombe Local Government Area (LGA), Gombe State, various disability inclusion programs have been implemented over the years by government and non-governmental organizations. These programs aim to provide support, such as vocational training, financial assistance, and social services, to enable people with disabilities to participate fully in the economy.
Despite these efforts, challenges persist in the effective implementation of disability inclusion programs, including stigma, limited access to education and training, and a lack of accessible infrastructure. This study evaluates the effectiveness of disability inclusion programs in Gombe, focusing on their impact on the economic participation of individuals with disabilities. By assessing the outcomes of these programs, this research will offer insights into the barriers and opportunities for people with disabilities to engage in economic activities and contribute to the local economy (Ibrahim & Musa, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although disability inclusion programs have been introduced in Gombe LGA, there is limited research on their actual impact on the economic participation of individuals with disabilities. Many persons with disabilities continue to face challenges in securing employment, accessing vocational training, and participating in economic activities. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of existing programs in improving the economic integration of people with disabilities and propose strategies to enhance these efforts.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the impact of disability inclusion programs on the economic participation of individuals with disabilities in Gombe.
To identify the barriers preventing full economic integration of people with disabilities in Gombe.
To recommend improvements to existing disability inclusion programs in Gombe LGA.
1.4 Research Questions
How effective have disability inclusion programs been in promoting economic participation among people with disabilities in Gombe?
What are the key barriers to the economic participation of individuals with disabilities in Gombe?
How can existing disability inclusion programs be improved to enhance the economic participation of people with disabilities?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Disability inclusion programs in Gombe have significantly improved the economic participation of people with disabilities.
Barriers such as stigma and lack of infrastructure continue to hinder the full economic participation of people with disabilities in Gombe.
Improvements to existing disability inclusion programs will lead to greater economic integration of people with disabilities in Gombe.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it provides an evaluation of disability inclusion programs and their impact on economic participation. The findings will inform policymakers, development agencies, and disability advocacy groups about the effectiveness of current programs and offer recommendations for improving economic inclusion. The research also aims to contribute to the broader discourse on disability rights and economic empowerment in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on the disability inclusion programs in Gombe Local Government Area and evaluates their impact on economic participation. It will cover individuals with disabilities and the relevant programs and interventions in the area. The scope is limited to Gombe, and it does not cover other regions in the state or Nigeria. A limitation of the study may include difficulties in accessing data due to the sensitive nature of disability issues.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

Economic Participation: The involvement of individuals in economic activities, including employment, entrepreneurship, and other income-generating activities.
